COMMON PROCEDURES PERFORMED:

  • Tonsillectomy and/ or Adenoidectomy – Removal of the tonsils and/or adenoids can be used to treat recurrent infections, sleep apnea, snoring, and development of tonsil stones. The procedure is typically performed on an outpatient basis if the child is more than 3 years old. Recovery is typically ten days. Hydration and soft diet are very important in the postoperative period. For more information see the section on Adenoid and Tonsils.
  • Grommet (Ventilation/ Ear Tubes) insertion.
  • Nasal cautery – Nasal cautery is a procedure to stop nosebleeds. Nosebleeds are most commonly caused from excessive dryness, frequent nose picking, and enlarged nasal blood vessels. In some cases certain areas of the nose may need to be cauterized to prevent further bleeding. This can be done either by chemical or Electrocautery/ Laser.
  •  Removal of foreign bodies – Foreign bodies may become lodged in different orifices in the head and neck region (ear, nose, back of throat). Many times these can be removed in clinic in a cooperative child.  In some cases it may require general anesthesia and be performed in the operating room.
  • Endoscopic Sinus Surgery. For more information see the section on Sinus Surgery.
  • Frenulectomy (releasing Tongue tie) – Ankyloglossia (Tongue tie) can be treated by performing a frenotomy which is a procedure that incises the lingual frenulum to release the tongue.
