Bad Breath Halitosis

Bad breath (Halitosis) is a common problem affecting many adults. The commonest cause of bad breath is poor oral hygiene resulting from decaying food debris caught between the teeth and gum. Other causes of bad breath include:

  • inflammation of the sinuses (Sinusitis)
  • tonsil or throat infection
  • dry mouth
  • smoking
  • alcohol and certain foods e.g. Garlic and Onion
  • excessive coating of the tongue with food debris and bacteria, etc.
  • Heavy exercise and excessive weight reduction

  • Improving oral hygiene – Warm saline/ antiseptic gurgles. Correct brushing technique and regular flossing of teeth
  • chewing sugar free gum to increase the flow of saliva
  • avoiding smoking, drinking alcohol and eating spicy foods
  • using a tongue cleaner to brush and clean the tongue
  • Proper treatment of conditions like Sinusitis if present
